What’s the best kind of pipe to use for underground drainage?
I need to divert gutter downspout water to various discharge points on my property. I want to bury the pipe, but will have outlets into emitters, a rock basin, and so on.
A few weeks ago I bought a bunch of 3″ solid HDPE pipe for underground drainage. But I’m wondering if I should return it an use schedule 40 PVC. Or, would ABS be better?
I think I bought the HDPE because at first I was going to get perforated underground drainage pipe and do french drains, but decided against it at the store and just got the unperforated / solid HDPE.
It may have been less expensive, too.
But I am most concerned with using the right material for the job and getting something that will last. I do not want to be digging up my underground drainage in a tears time!

Id use sch 40 some people use 30/34 pipe but if you hit it in the winter its broke.4”sch 40 to get away from the house then switch to 4″coiled drain tile with the sock cover unless your running it out to grade then sch 40 above ground 30-34 under ground. perforated pipe is 2729 the 3034 is like one grade thicker. 3″ pipe will not handle the flow from a roof.and fyi dwv(drain waste and vent) is sch 40 The cheaper way of going sch 40 would be using foam core pipe its not for pressure.
I would use DWV grade 3 in. its cheaper and work as good as sch.40.DWV stands for Drain Waste Vent.
