What to do when you get a sewage outflow

When toilet or shower waste pipes show sewage backflow, you must immediately ask for professional help. This drainage will contain microbes so it should be cleaned at once and your plumbing system should be repaired so as to prevent it from happening again.

As you wait for the plumbers to reach your location, start sanitising the affected area with a mixture of bleaching agent and water with a ratio of one cup to five Imperial gallons respectively. Make sure that young kids and elder family members stay away from the drainage leakage, and put on long pants, gloves and boots. Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands with warm water and soap when you have finished the drainpipes clearup. The less water you have going down the drainage the better in terms of preventing more sewage backing up whilst you wait for help.

The main sewage drainpipe may have choked up, or it may just be the pipework joining the toilet and shower that is stopped. Either way, your top priority should be to prevent your family from exposure to disease causing bacteria.

Diarrhea, high temperatures, stomach pains, chills and vomiting are some of the common symptoms of being exposed to raw sewage. Consult a doctor at once if you , or anyone in your family, exhibit any of the above symptoms.

Clean all items and surfaces that in come in contact with the sewage, including children’s toys, using a standard cup mixture of unscented domestic bleaching agent in every five Imperial gallons of water. Not only should you throw away food that came in contact with the sewage, but also items than cannot be washed or cleaned (such as mattresses, stuffed animals, baby toys, and food cutting boards).

You can use a plumbers snake if the sewage back up is in shower area. For the best results you should use a one quarter inch snake that is 8 yards in length. The snake can be maneuvered conveniently down the plumbing pipes. Sometimes the toilet in a bathroom can be fine but the shower backs up. This happens because the toilet trap is installed about 6 inches above the floor and the shower drain is installed at the same level as the floor.

Call a professional plumber or sewers contractor if you are unable to clear the back up yourself. A good team of plumbers or drains pipes services operator, like Dyno Rod, will clean and disinfect the contaminated area and identify and repair the plumbing fault quicker and better. It is better to let the professional handle the plumbing repairs unless you know exactly what you are doing.
