what can i put in my soon to be garden to help with drainage?

garden drainage

I live in South Carolina and have the “wonderful” southern clay in my garden. What can I put in there to help water drain? We had a storm today and there is literately about 4 inches of standing water in there right now. It’s going to be a vegetable garden, so it can’t be anything that will hurt the food. I’m also going to have roses on one side, so it can’t hurt those either. Thanks.

sounds like you might need a french drain, just google and find someone in your area that can do this or check out your home depots and ask

When we needed better garden drainage, we put nice gravel rocks underneath the soil. This makes a barrier between the soil your plants will live in and the earth underneath. It worked for us by giving the water a place to go and drain quicker. Hope this helps. Oh… and it won’t hurt anything…
