Is there a trap under the sink or is it a sink that has been added on.

What you are describing leads me to believe that you have a garbage disposal for you sink. True? Well if true, then this is more than likely the culprit! The check-valve on the drain from the disposal unit is bad. Could be from the dishwasher drain, too. I'd check them both out.
