The clay base is what causes the water to not drain. You should add a soil amendment that will break up the clay and allow water and air to circulate in the soil.

There is a great product called Pozzolan that will do this. It is an all natural volcanic diatomaceous soil amendment. It is extremely porous and will loosen the soil. It is used a lot on sports fields and golf courses, areas that get a lot of foot traffic and compaction.

It is also a water saver. It will absorb and store water at the root zone and then release the stored moisture back to the plant as needed. You can cut your watering in at least half by using Pozzolan.

Best thing is that you only need to apply it once. It will stay in the soil forever. Work the Pozzolan into the clay about 6 inches. You can also use it in flower pots and container gardens.

Good luck!
