When toilet or shower waste pipes show drainage backup, you must immediately ask for professional help. Sewerage is polluted with germs therefore it should be removed and the offending piping be fixed without a delay to avoid a repeat occurence.

Dilute a cup of bleach with 5 Imperial gallons of water and start sanitising the toilet, even before the plumbers come in. Keep kids, ageing relatives, and pets away from the area, and wear long pants, eye wear, gloves and boots. Sterilise your hands with soap and hot water after the cleanup. Reduce the flushing of water into the drain to keep sewage back flow under control.

The main drainage drainpipe may have clogged up, or it may just be the pipework joining the toilet and shower that is obstructed. Your first concern, without worrying about the cause, should be protecting your family from harmful waste.

Diarrhea, high temperatures, stomach pains, chills and vomiting are some of the common symptoms of being exposed to raw sewerage. Seek medical attention right away if you experience any of these symptoms.

Clean all items and surfaces that in come in contact with the sewage, including children’s toys, using a standard cup mixture of unscented domestic bleach in every five Imperial gallons of water. Any drainage affected item that cannot be washed, like pillows, mattresses or stuffed toys, has to be disposed off safely.

If the drainage backflow is in the shower area, try using a snake. For such drainpipes and pipe joints in close proximity, a quarter-inch snake of 25 feet length will work fine. You can move a quarter inch snake easily inside the drains pipes line. It’s possible that your shower fills up with sewerage without the toilet in the same bathroom being affected. This is because shower drainpipes are typically installed level to the floor, whereas the toilet trap is usually about 5 to 6 inches above.

An expert tradesman, a plumber, must be contacted if you can’t fix the backup yourself. A plumber will not only be able to clean up the mess that the leaked sewerage created for you but also locate where the blockage is. It is wise to get a plumber in if you don’t have knowledge when is comes to drainage backups and other plumbing issues.
