Agravation time – blocked waste pipes

This has happened to all of us – the water fast submerging our feet while are taking a shower. It’s definitely not a very good feeling! A obstructed drainpipe sounds horrible to begin with. And it’s not confined to the bath and shower, you could be brushing your teeth getting ready for bed only to be confronted with the sink filling up rapidly. The prospect of sorting stopped drainage out is not a happy one; it can be messy and time consuming. But the fact is that sooner or later, a bathroom drainpipe is going to become plugged or suffer a blockage. The best course of action for you is to be prepared to deal with it by learning how to unblock bathroom drains.

First, let’s look at why drainage become clogged and what are the main causes of a blockage.

Most often, when the dirt, sand and debris that we wash off from our bodies combines with the hair that we shed in a bath, all those entangled clumps accumulate within and eventually block the drain. Everyday products like soaps, shampoos, detergents and so on add to the problem by building up around the solid material. When the offending mass becomes too dense to allow any water to flow through freely, the problem is identified as a choked drain. When waste water drains very slowly or just stands stubbornly in the washbasin, you know you have a clogged drainpipe problem.

How do you unblock your drainage?.

Here are a few things that you can do to clean your clogged bathroom drainpipe and get the water running. The first step is to remove the plug whether the blocked drainpipe is in a sink or bath. In the case of the bathroom sink, you can remove the plug by either pulling it out, unscrewing the nuts that hold it in proper position. In case of your bath, the plug can be unscrewed at the mouth of the drainage or the overflow plate can be removed to expose the assembly.

The accumulated matter clogging up your drain pipe may be clearly visible when you have taken off the stopper. Whilst messy, it is nothing, but a mound of hair and fragments around the components of the bathroom drainpipe. Try to get as much of this out as possible by hand, this could solve the drainage problem. Use a wire from a clothes hangar or some other apparatus if you have difficulties reaching the blockage or grabbing the build up so that you can pull it out. As soon as the blockage is got rid of, water will start running freely through the drain pipe.

However other methods can be used in case the blockage is unreachable even with a hanger. Use a drainpipe plunger to loosen the blockage that is deeper down the pipework. In the first step, use a wet cloth to cover the overflowing drain, and then use the plunger; this will make the suction stronger. Then, put the plunger over the drain pipe and push up and down half a dozen times. When you finally release the plunger, any trapped water should immediately be drained.

You may have to turn to a chemical solution, if the plunger fails to do the job. This method should only be used as a last resort because the chemicals used are dangerous and can be harmful to your bathroom fixtures.

Bring in the Pros for a professional drainage solution.

If all the do-it-yourself methods fail, then call a plumber experienced in drains work to do the needful. Plumbers have special equipment to clean the clogged up drainage speedily and effortlessly such as a drains snake, drainage contractors also employ water jetting to clear blockages and cctv drainage cameras to view inside the drain pipe. It may cost you, but you will find it is worth the money once you can use your sink and shower worry free.
